History

Freedom Sciences is a company focused on applying innovative and creative uses of technology to improve the lives of all humans. We have a particular focus on helping those with limited abilities and the elderly. Our company mission is:

Improve the quality of life for all humans through innovative and creative applications of technology.

Freedom Sciences was formed in July of 2005. We are an outgrowth of the ATRS project started by our sister company, Cook Technologies, Inc. and the Freedom Lift Corporation, whom we purchased in 2008. Since Freedom Sciences has its roots in Cook Technologies and Freedom Lift, along with that comes Cook’s 60+ years of experience in engineering and commercializing high quality products. Our Corporate Headquarters encompasses more than 110,000 square feet and is situated on over 15 acres in beautiful Green Lane, Pennsylvania. We have very strong ties with various academic institutions (see listings below) and we work closely with university researchers in order to bring cutting edge discoveries in science into the hands of those who will benefit from it as quickly as possible. (We also maintain a Research and Development facility located at the Philadelphia Navy Ship Yard Complex; however this is a guarded and controlled facility and would require prior clearance for visitation purposes.)

University Partners

Lehigh University, Vision-based Autonomous Devices and Experimental Robotics Laboratory (VADER Lab)

The VADER Lab at Lehigh University, headed up by Dr. John Spletzer, is conducting cutting-edge research in the area of mobile robotics and robot vision. Freedom Sciences works very closely with Dr. Spletzer and his graduate students to help commericialize and integrate their computer vision and image processing work into our products.

Carnegie Mellon University, The National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC)

The NREC is an operating unit within Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute (RI), the world's largest robotics research and development organization. The NREC frequently adapts and refines technology developed at the Robotics Institute for industrial or government use. Freedom Sciences has a very strong relationship with many CMU/NREC personnel, including Jim Osborne ("Oz"). Our colloboration with NREC includes full system engineering and hardening, hardware engineering, and LIDAR based navigation algorithms and software development.

University of Pittsburgh, Human Engineering Research Laboratory (HERL)

HERL is a worldwide leader of research and development that increases the mobility and function of people with disabilities. HERL places a strong emphasis on clinical research and medical rehabilitation. Freedom Sciences will be working with HERL to conduct clinical studies and usability testing of our ATRS product line. HERL's vast experience with the human factors of technology, particularly in the area of Quality of Life Technology, is an incredible asset for our organization and ultimately our customers.
